Is there a reliable source for the vented dustcap found on an early 515? Mine has been replaced at some point with a "solid" dustcap. Is there a notable difference in high frequencies with the vented dustcap?

Well- Great Plains is always were I get Altec parts.
I am going to assume you mean mid response as opposed to HF, a 15" really doesn't have HF response in the proper sense. The answer is yes it will change the response. Your speaker may have not been re-coned with real parts- some fake kits are not even close. Check your cones to find numbers, there is a parts list to check against at Great Plains.

Thanks for your response. The cone is numbered 20159 and appears to be all original, except the dustcap. I have the original. I was replaced as it had delaminated from the cone and was too brittle to reglue. You are of course right with regard to high vs mid frequencies. I was not referring to high in the sense of treble but, rather, recognizing (as I understand it) that higher frequencies are emitted from the cone centre in a bass/mid or full range speaker. The highs are not half bad with this 515, but the shortcomings are evident when I add a treble horn and XO (Goodmans Trebax 100 and 950 XO).
